1: My God….did you read about this latest about genetically modified organisms?
2: No—what did it say?
1: That mice fed genetically modified food developed monstrous tumors.
3: That’s right—the scientific evidence is piling up and most of Europe has banned GMO crops.
2: Thank God we don’t have that stuff here.
1: But we do, it’s in all of our food.
2: What? It’s not on the labels!
3: The big players in bio-engineered food—like Dupont and Monsanto– don’t want it to be.
2: Well then we have to get government officials to mandate it.
1: Didn’t President Obama say in his 2008 campaign “Let folks know when their food is genetically modified, because Americans have a right to know what they’re buying.”
3: Yes he did and then no they didn’t.
2: Well I am sure someone in the federal agencies like the Department of Agriculture or the Food and Drug Administration is on top of this.
3: There is the National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
1: Who runs that?
3: Roger Beachy, former director of the Monsanto Danforth Center.
2: Isn’t there a new czar of food safety at the FDA?
3: Michael Taylor, former vice-president for public policy foe Monsanto.
2: But how about the head of the USDA Tom Vilsack?
3: He was given a Governor of the Year Award by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, whose members include Monsanto.
1: So basically the science is one side, the money is on the other…
2: And our political leaders are following the money
3: Exactly.
